Romania Committee on Gender, Science and Technology
The Romanian Committee on Gender, Science and Technology (RGC) was created in November 2001. At present, the Committee is hosted by the OPTOELECTRONICA 2001 Research Institute in Bucharest, and staffed by 2 persons of the International Collaboration Department, i.e. the project co-ordinator and a secretary. OPTOELECTRONICA provides office space, communications, equipment and personnel time to RGC.
Its areas of focus are:
- to increase women's economic empowerment, employment and status in science and technology-related occupations in Romania
- Development of research and technology programs or projects with significant impact on women's work, particularly in rural communities and less favoured areas.
- Consult and work with national policy makers, researchers and NGOs to influence national policy and develop a national programme of activity.
Objectives
Through its activities the RGC aims at finding instruments to promote and obtain:
- Wider access to education and professional training for women by facilitating the dissemination of information regarding training and career opportunities.
- Involvement and development of research and technology programs or projects with significant impact on women's work, particularly in rural communities and less favoured areas.
- Wider involvement in science and technology activities and promotion of women in managerial and decision-making positions.
- Better access to the information concerning the activities of gender organizations in Romania and abroad, focusing on their usefulness for women's education and career advancement.
In this context, the RGC is intended to act as a catalyst of gender initiatives in Romania and to become a channel of information from other gender-oriented organisms, internationally and regionally (through collaboration with neighbouring countries such as Hungary, Bulgaria, and Yugoslavia).
